In Denial of Leaving Melaka

Vendredi, 27th Janvier 2012; 12:08
Location: Melaka Malaysia
Why: Finger licking good in red pants.

BEP playing on my iPod as I thump away on the Acer at Voyage Cafe. I love this place and am in complete denial that the day after tomorrow, I will have to leave Melaka for Chiang Mai. Nathan and Nora just left for the Baboon House where I will be joining them later today to likely waste the day away talking art shop and scratching up some drawings in the sketchbook.

The hip and cozy Voyage Traveler's Lodge Cafe. Come here when you get to Melaka:

I got a really nice wall post from the leggy Irish gal I traveled with back in Chiang Mai and she reminded me just how much fun we had there. So, it'll be good to get back up to Thailand's northern city. Plus, I'll be meeting up with my travel soul sister, the lovely Anna Z. Looking forward to seeing you woman and exchanging boy flavoured rants.

One of my favourite things to do in Melaka is indulge in Indian food on the DL, read: Super Cheap and Cheerful. It has been great practice for when I finally get my ass to that country eventually.

Still a rookie at this eating with my hands business but I love how it makes me feel like a kid:

The best part is licking my fingers:

Ever licked the food off a Young German's fingers? I did. Um, wow. That's all I'm going to say about that incident.

Moving on.....

The other day, I tucked myself in the lovely Limau Limau cafe upstairs for a change and whiled away the time drinking fancy coffee.

Day 2: Favourite Coffee Shop, order fancy coffee, draw it

The scabs are really itching and I will not be revealing anything for a while. Your patience is much appreciated.

In the meantime, I've got to go get those red pants hemmed for the first day of class. Friedrich tried them on and they fit him perfectly. Wow. My heart skipped a beat and I had a moment there.

Daily Livin' in Melaka

Mardi 24th Janvier, 2012; 16:04
Location: Melaka Malaysia
Why: Ramblings about burning bras, life in Melaka's Chinatown and inspirational quotes.

Happy Year of the Dragon. My year baby! Thievery Corporation's Free is playing on the sound system at Jalan Jalan 2 Guesthouse. I have wholed myself away today at the other JJ Guesthouse drawing and listening to TC. Also, taking refuge from the sun while parts of my body heals. Stay tuned for that one.

In the meantime, life in Melaka has been about eating delicious Indian on the cheap, playing rounds of a newly learned card game called Cactus, celebrating the New Year and of course, continuous flirtations with the Young German. Ninja Destruction has once again picked up steam and I almost ran off to Singapore with the funny French guy that Cecilia introduced me to a few days ago.

However, once the alcohol levels reduced to a sober level the next day, I reconsidered. Instead, Cecilia and I did some shopping and I'm proud to say I have an outfit for my first day of class! Including shoes and socks. Oh man, my shoes are a hoot! It's definitely not what you would consider 'professional' but it screams Davie Pocstar. Picture to follow soon.

Meanwhile, I have managed to continue Sarah's 30 Day Drawing Challenge.

Day 26: Draw Something You Don't Like:

I firmly believe that bras are the shackles of women's liberation. If it were up to me, I say Burn Your Bras!! Perhaps I am biased because I don't really need one. My girls have never gotten any bigger than an A cup. This may be T.M.I. Sorry.

Here's the drawing in sepia:

And then I skipped to my 30 Day Drawing Challenge just to change things up. Drawing a quote that inspires me and remember it throughout the Challenge. This was easy to draw.

My brother wrote a great email to me recently where he said this:

Words of wisdom.

In the past 8+ months, I have gotten lost and found myself over and over again. Without going into detail, it is so fun to discover aspects of myself that I never knew existed. The people I have met along the way have also helped shape the person I am becoming and aspire to be. Hanging around creative people has been so inspiring that I don't want to leave Melaka at the end of the month. I won't be surprised if I find myself back here again in the near future.

But right now, I am craving some Thosai Masala with a glass of Teh Tarik at Saravanna's.

Talking Shop with Artists, Intellects and A Monkey.

Vendredi 21st Janvier 2012; 16:49
Location: Melaka Malaysia
Why: Monkeying around in Melaka's Baboon House.

Hanging out at the Baboon House in Melaka's Chinatown this afternoon in the company of other artists and intellects feels like home. Like I belong somewhere. If I wasn't heading up to Chiang Mai for my TEFL training course, I would be on the hunt for a studio and in search of copious amounts of art supplies.

Instead, the next best thing is talking art shop with actors, writers and artists. And a man name Goh Khee Wei, an expert on monkeys. We have been indulging in his baby monkey, ten week old Keysa for hours. Jazz is playing on the sound system while the owner Roger's dog Roro is playfully scampering around our feet. Roger, a gracious young man is keeping our drinks full as we converse on everything ending with the ubiquitous Chinese "la" after each sentence.

Keysa just hanging out in a cloth bag, no biggie:

The artsy Baboon House Cafe:

I love my life.

Oh and Sam, the owner of Jalan Jalan messed up some bookings so the Young German and I have to share a single room tonight. This will be um, very interesting. But you know I don't kiss and tell. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Tonight is Open Mic night at Voyage Traveller's Cafe where these very artists will be doing spoken word, music and live performances. The Young German will be doing an interpretative performance based on the German novel Faust we picked up today at the Second Hand Books shop. It is indeed an idyllic life these days.

And I finally sorted out my 30 Day Drawing Challenge. Feel free to do it with me:

Unlike my friend's challenge where I posted every day's challenge, (well up until Day 25), I will randomly post my drawings where applicable or where inventory (as my friend Asmin called it) is available.

So tonight sees promise of an evening filled with inspiration of impromptu artistic expression. I am exactly where I am suppose to be right now. In the present.

Goodbye Ubud. Hello Melaka Again. Oh, Hello Sweet German.

Jeudi 19th Janvier, 2012; 20:41
Location: Melaka Malaysia
Why: Pimpin' in KL and stumbling back to Melaka for more shenanigans.

Shit, it's been 10 days since I last wrote and I have really fallen off the 30 Day Drawing Challenge. I freely admit it. Many distractions have caused such derailment, including catching a cold, Roman making his way back to Ubud, volcano treks and hanging out with an awesome local Balinese.

Also, the torrential downpours during my end of days in Ubud had me lazy and unmotivated. As I tried in vain to keep my clothes from damping up everyday, alas, I packed it all up after two months of staying in one place. I hugged my housemate Jasmine goodbye and boarded the mini van bound for Denpasar airport.

Three hours later, I landed back in KL and my excitement to be back on the road roared to life again. Surprisingly, my pack didn't feel as heavy as I thought having not carried it around the past two months. Good sign as I have a slight obsession with the weight of my two packs. I still need to write about this topic.

Alright, I got into KL and made my way to my couch surfing host located near the Thai Embassy for obvious reasons - I needed to get my 60Day Thai visa. My host was very gracious and I stayed at the most balling penthouse ever. Even more ballin' than my cousin's home in Vietnam. For privacy reasons, I will not post any pics of her place.

Except maybe the infinity pool outside the penthouse. No bigs:

My last drawing - Day 25: Draw A Couple:

I liked my take on this Draw A Couple. Originally, I was going to draw a "couple of yahoos" - a quote my best mate and I had declared once when someone asked us if we were together. But I didn't feel like drawing another human being - too predictable.

Blah, blah, blah, onwards to the next adventure!

I am back in Melaka! Hanging out at Jalan Jalan Guesthouse again. Met the famous Nora to see about getting some work done. Work? Yep. Alexis M, wait for it....I've got my session booked with Miss Nora tomorrow.

In the meantime, I've been in the company of a wonderful young German. Even younger than The 22 Year Old who just happens to be sleeping in the same bed where 22 Year Old slept. There's something about that corner bed at Jalan Jalan..... Anyway, ever the boy crazy gal that I am, I'm not sure why it's the young men that seem to stumble into my universe. Maybe it's all part of the Game. Walks along the canal, a movie date and all around googly smiles and laughs with each other has got me moving on from 22 Year Old. And it's only been 24 hrs.

And it's only taken 2+ months to move on from Him. Not that I'm counting.

The drawing will continue. I just need to get a bigger sketch book. Thanks Solseng for giving me some direction. Even though I have not completed her 30 Day Challenge, I was so inspired that I wrote a 30 Day Drawing Challenge as well. Send me a message if you are interested. Or maybe I'll post it here....I'll need to open up Photoshop. Gimme a few minutes.

It's the next day (10:23am). Wow, that was a fun night with the Young German. No I don't kiss and tell. (:

Today is an exciting day! Details to come.

Three Days in One = Back on Track

Lundi 9th Janvier, 2012; 22:11
Location: Ubud, Bali Indonesia
Why: Missing Mary-Jane while needing new clothes and wanting an ice cream. Triple scoop.

Seriously epic torrential downpours these days in paradiseland. Running a quick errand today, I actually wore pants, then had to hike them to just below my knees before getting on the Scoopy. And everything is just so damp. Including my brain...

I wasn't kidding about the growing pile of snot rags next to my bed. Feel sorry for me *pouts*:

So the next three drawings are about something I want, need, and miss. Well, if I really drew these three things, it would actually be one drawing and reveal a certain young lad who left weeks ago. But I'll let him remain a mystery for you fine folks out there.

Instead, here are the alternatives along with practicing my French:

Day 21: Dessin Je Veux Quelque Chose (Draw Something I Want):
Cute boys aside, Je veux vraiment une creme de glace avec un cerise!

Visual translation:

Salivating as I finished up this drawing:

Day 22: Dessin Je Manque Quelque Chose (Draw Something I Miss):
No boy will I ever miss as much as I miss sweet Mary-Jane from BC. Just thinking about her brings me back to Wreck Beach on a hot day while cracking a cold beer with my best mate. Naked.

Can someone send me a care package? Perhaps in the form of Special Brownies? Austin?

Day 23: Dessin Je Besoin Quelque Chose (Draw Something I Need):
Word on the street is I need new threads for the TEFL course I'll be starting in a few weeks. Not only do I need to wear shirts or blouses with collar and sleeves, but I can only wear skirts below the knees or dress slacks. Worst of all, I have to wear (wait for it) - socks and shoes! The horror! Actually, I'm not sure which is worse, socks and shoes or (wait for it) - a bra! ***breaks into a cold sweat**

I haven't done a fashion illustration in forever. Pretty rusty. Je besoin des vetements professionel pour l'ecole:

Dylan, how did I do with my French?? Looking at that growing pile on the floor is making me feel yucky. Must get off bed and pick up after self. Feel sorry for me *pouts again*

Four Days in One and Still Behind

Dimanche, 8th Janvier, 2012; 23:29
Location: Ubud, Bali Indonesia
Why: Orange you glad I'm doodling a new friend amidst bamboo plants? I'm so clever. And sick.

I am behind on my 30 Day Drawing Challenge. Three reasons. 1) Cecilia and Roman were in Bali! 2) I'm bloody sick. 3) Epic downpours.

Okay, the last reason is a cop out but the rain is keeping me from getting better! Je suis tres malade ):

Spent some QT with two peeps that I adore, we made some epic drives to and from Kuta. Which consequently, got us all under the weather. Due to epic downpours. No kiddin'!

My two babes in town for a visit. Very late lunch (early dinner?) at Sari Organiks:

No matter how furiously I sketched today, I am still days behind. But here is the effort:

Day 17: Draw My Favourite Plant:
Well, I don't know if you'd consider bamboo a plant or a tree. I think they're both. Regardless, it is friggin' awesome and I had a blast drawing it in black ink.

Pilot G-Tec-C4 in 0.4, Black - you complete me:

Day 18: Draw Just a Doodle:
Literally....

...just a doodle:

Moving on...

Day 19: Draw Something New:
Mark Zipf. He's new. As in my newest and 350th friend on Facebook. That counts right? Mark is also the only Gerppino I know. Hey, that's new.

Concentrating while plugged into Deadmau5:

Creeped his profile pic and chose this one to draw:

If I like you, I may creep you too. Then draw you. Creepy? Only when I've been drinking.

Day 20: Draw Something Orange:
Solseng! How did you know orange is my favourite colour? I love Orange so much it was the theme for my 32nd birthday party. Creep my Orange Party photo album. Go on, you know you wanna.

I should put this on my Christmas list for this year:

Just make sure it's Pantone 021 C!

Well, that's all I got for you fine folks. After tonight, I'll only be three days behind. But that's tomorrow's concern. Right now, I'm concerned about the growing pile of snot rags next to my bed.

Finding Family and Inspiration on Facebook?

Lundi 2nd Janvier, 2012; 16:56
Location: Ubud, Bali Indonesia
Why: So that Facebook is not a TOTAL waste of time...

Man, I'm really loving Deadmau5 these days. The only thing missing when rocking out to these beats is some good ol' BC bud. Instead, I'm being productive and pumping out words here.

So new years came and went. Jasmine and I had our lovely Japanese neighbours over for dinner along with an old friend of Jasmine's, Julio; accompanied by his girlfriend Antonia.

Amazing Indian food was prepared by Jasmine. We broke out the wine and were all in good spirits. Later, Jasmine and I walked down our street to the soccer field where Michael Franti and guests were playing a benefit concert for the Bumi Sehat Birthing Clinic - two doors down from our house. Amazing stuff. Simply amazing. A great start to 2012.

Day 15: Draw a Family Picture:
Unfortunately, I don't have a complete photo of my immediate family with me (don't judge). So I had to get creative. Facebook. Love it and hate it. My sister Diane had tagged me in a very old picture; our first Christmas in Canada. This was before Diane and Day's time.

As much as I adore the photo, I admit to having a hard time drawing this family portrait. For one thing, it is very old and details are lost. Another thing, it's just hard to draw myself and, it seems family members.

And so, I have a family picture that is perfectly incomplete. I kinda like that it is not finished:

Close up of Dad, me, Cam and Mum. Not much of a resemblance but...:

Not every day is a stellar drawing day. I am okay with that.

Day 16: Draw an Inspiration:
Wow, where do I even start. Everyday is an inspiration for me. Waking up knowing all the possibilities out there is so exciting. And yet I was at a loss for what to draw. Then, I remembered a picture someone posted on Facebook. So I went back to that picture, downloaded it (again, don't judge) for reference.

It's actually not really a picture but a sort of manifesto. Similar to lululemon's. I love manifestos. I even have my own; before working for lulu. I think talking about my manifesto in my interview had something to do with getting the job. Is that true KC?

I picked out the mantra's (if you will) that resonated with me and recreated it here:

My personal favourite:

The Inspiration for the Inspiration:

I just bought another fun piece of fabric. I have no idea what I'm going to make but it's got giraffes printed on it. Giraffes!! And it's pink!
